A blog is an informal avenue for posting frequent material. It can be shared with varying degrees of privacy and contributed to by a group of people of an individual.
I am on tumblr and Pinterest, which makes me familiar with blog formats, but my involvement basically extends to reblogging or saving other peoples' posts to my dashboard.
They can be used in a classroom as a cooperative Push-To medium where students are able to access the blog--their own information as well as their classmates--from any computer with internet access. It can be used either as a source of school housekeeping, where students might ask questions about homework or upcoming events, or it can be used as part of the curriculum, where students might post reflections of class readings or something along those lines.
This is the blog of a high school girl from my hometown whose blog has been converted into a book. So, blogs can really lead to something. LINK
